Wath 2nd XV 59 Dinnington 2nd XV 7 (HT 26-7) It was a challenging afternoon for a Dinnington squad of 18 who made the short trip to Moor Road to face table topping Wath. A blistering start from the home side in receipt of the Dinnington kick followed by indiscipline at the breakdown led to several penalties and an early converted try for the hosts. The Dinnington kickers struggled to find their range in a swirling wind making it hard for the visitors to gain any forward momentum. This led to sustained pressure from a well organised Wath who took full advantage scoring 3 more tries in quick succession to race into a 26 point lead with barely 20 minutes played. Second row Conor Harris also departed the action early with a head injury. Dinnington eventually managed to get on the front foot with scrum and lineout functioning well supported by strong running from the backs. Notable breaks from centre Jack Sigsworth and an impressive Connor Pilkington cutting in from full back were shut out at the last moment by a scrambling Wath defence. Reward finally came with a well worked team try. Powerful running from captain Richard White spearheaded the first of several phases in the opposition 22 rounded off with a try under the posts from Jack Sigsworth. Dale Young confidently dispatched the conversion and with several other chances to score narrowly missed the visitors ended the half in buoyant mood. Receiving the kick in the second half Dinnington progressed into their opponents half confident of further points only for Wath to work a turnover over and break through the Dinnington rear guard to add to their points tally. The remainder of the half followed a similar pattern with a tiring Dinnington becoming more stretched as Wath used their replacements to good effect. Furth injuries in the Dinnington ranks made for an uncomfortable final 20 minutes as the hosts continued to exploit the gaps. Never the less Dinnington stuck to the task and were nearly rewarded with a late consolation when a solid scrummage near the half way line forced a retreating Wath into conceding a penalty. The ball was skilfully put to the corner by the Dinnington kicker and the visitors came close from the resulting play only for the ball to be recovered through excellent Wath defence . Wath again worked the ball forward with the inevitable outcome. The resulting conversion rounded off a game which proved a good test of character for a developing Dinnington team.
