Dinnington Second XV 41 Sheffield Medics 2nd XV 10 (HT 31-0)
The second team welcomed a Sheffield Medics XV to Lodge Lane for the second time this season with Medics unable to host the return fixture. A powerful Dinnington forward pack supported by strong running backs dominated the early exchanges and set the tone for the first half. Medics struggled to contain Dinnington pressure at the lineout with Ryan Cooper rising to claim opposition ball on several occasions. The first try was not long in coming when Medics failed to control the ball under heavy pressure at the scrum with flanker Tom Westbury pouncing to claim the first of 2 first half tries. A powerful charge led to a first senior try for second row Conor Harris. Further tries from captain Dale Young and Dylan Shaw and an accomplished kicking display from John Somerville with 3 from 5 conversions in challenging conditions resulted in a half time lead for the home side of 31 nil. Working up hill towards the clubhouse Dinnington aimed to continue the second half as they ended the first. Encamped in the opposition 22 looking for early points they were stunned as Medics turned the ball over and worked it neatly to their speedy back line. Before the Dinnington defence could adjust Medics went over in the corner for the first points of the half. Medics having failed to convert, Dinnington were immediately back in the opposition half. This time Medics opted to fire the ball long with speedy back line in pursuit. The ball was recovered deep in his own half by a retreating Sam Heathcote who then delivered a moment of individual brilliance giving rise to a contender for try of the season. In a display of blistering pace and skill Heathcote weaved his way through the on rushing Medics going the length of the field for a try. A number of penalties conceded by Dinnington in their eagerness to recover the ball coupled with a shortened more effective line out from Medics led to a prolonged period of attack effectively repelled by Dinnington until Medics eventually went over again in the corner. Once again Medics failed to convert. Both sides then struggled to gain any forward momentum in a stop start contest played largely in the centre of the field before a neat move by the Dinnington Backs resulted in a well worked first senior try for Charlie Orchards. An injury to Somerville meant Dinnington were unable to add any second half points from the kicking tee and stubborn defence from both teams meant neither side gained any further reward.
